The Ormond Learning Hub began in 2020 at Ormond Uniting Church as an idea by our then-Minister Andrew Boyle.
The timing of the hub’s inception, amid the COVID-19 lockdowns in Melbourne, shaped its purpose and format.
As people grappled with isolation and uncertainty, the hub became a place to connect, learn, and reflect together.
Since then, it has blossomed into a vibrant space for faith formation, offering participants from Ormond and beyond a chance to explore theology, scripture, and life’s big questions.
What started as a single course each year has grown into three offerings annually: two short courses at either end of the year and a longer course during the winter months.
This progression reflects our desire to meet the hunger for thoughtful, accessible Christian education within and beyond our congregation.
We’ve been encouraged to see participants join us from churches across Melbourne, and we’re hopeful this reach will continue to expand.
Topics we’ve explored include pastoral care, Uniting Church theology, and introductions to both the New Testament and the parables of Luke.
We’ve journeyed through the primeval history of Genesis, examined ageing through a theological lens, and grappled with the intersections of faith and climate change.
Advent and the person of Jesus Christ have also been rich course topics.
The Ormond Learning Hub places great importance on creating a safe, friendly, and inclusive environment.
Faith is not just about acquiring knowledge: it’s about nurturing curiosity and deepening understanding in a way that transforms lives.
Each session incorporates small group discussions, thought-provoking reading materials, and diverse media such as art, music, and video.
These elements encourage participation and creativity, making the learning experience dynamic and collaborative.
While our short courses are typically held face-to-face, our longer winter courses are hosted on Zoom.
This has proven to be a practical and popular option during Melbourne’s colder months, when staying home feels much more inviting.
Feedback from participants has been very positive.
Many have shared how much they value the space, time, and safety to explore issues of faith that truly matter to them.
For some, it’s about finding answers, for others it’s about uncovering new questions.
But for all, the focus is on how faith intersects with real life.
We are passionate about making the Ormond Learning Hub a place where people can go beyond facts and ideas to engage with their lived experiences.
Our hope is that every session helps participants grow in their faith journey and feel part of a community that nurtures their spiritual curiosity.
Looking ahead, we’re excited about the possibilities.
The more we engage with people from other churches and backgrounds, the richer our discussions and learnings become.
If you’re looking for a place to explore your faith, ask big questions, or simply connect with others on this journey, the Ormond Learning Hub is here for you.
