The Uniting Church National Assembly is calling for contributions for the upcoming Assembly meeting’s worship book.
The committee overseeing production of the publication is asking potential contributors to provide prayers, poems, song lyrics and artwork for inclusion in the worship book.
The Uniting Church president-elect, Stuart McMillan’s theme for the upcoming meeting is ‘Hearts on Fire’. Discussing the significance of the theme Mr McMillan said fire is a rich symbol for the First Peoples of Australia.
“Fire sticks are used to care for country and pass on to others,” Mr McMillan said.
“Indeed, fire is a symbol for most indigenous cultures – the many different cultural and linguistically diverse peoples who are the Uniting Church in Australia.”
Mr McMillan noted the significance of fire as a reference to passion and the need for the Church act and be relevant in the wider community.
“For me this also speaks of our hearts and passion – the kind of ‘fanning into flame’ which Paul spoke of,” he said.
“The kind of fire that a church which is no longer at the ‘centre’ of Australian society, needs to have on the margins, at the edges, to be relevant, to act and to speak in this space.”
