OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe Uniting Church in Australia, through the Assembly’s Christian Unity Working Group (CUWG), recently farewelled long time member and former national secretary, Rev Dr Rob Gallacher. After nearly 25 year’s commitment to the UCA’s CUWG, Dr Gallacher has resigned.

From being a member in 1991, Dr Gallacher became the national secretary from 2001 – 2003. During that time he visited synod ecumenical committees throughout Australia, learning of and encouraging the ecumenical involvement of members of the Uniting Church.

“I have many good memories of my time with Christian Unity,” Dr Gallacher said. “Once having a sermon applauded when preaching through an interpreter in Ghana at a gathering of the Reformed Churches – now the World Communion of Reformed Churches, of which the UCA is a member. And I have really valued the commitment and care of the church leaders for each other at meetings of the executive of the National Council of Churches in Australia.”

Dr Gallacher further committed himself to the expression of the unity in Christ by becoming a member of the UCA team in dialogue with the Lutheran Church in Australia.

“The Christian Unity Working Group will miss Rob’s topical papers, his searching questions and his gentle wit,” Maureen Postma, chair of the CUWG, said. “But we know that whatever tasks he undertakes in the future there will still be an advocate for the Church to deepen its relationships with other churches – to work to overcome the divisions within the body of Christ, the Church.”
