The moderator nominating committee recently met to begin facilitating the selection of the next moderator of the Victoria and Tasmania Synod.

Committee members, Rev Trevor Bassett, Kirsty Bennett, John Diprose, Anna Harrison, Rev Alistair Macrae and Rev Lavingi Tupou will meet monthly in the lead up to the September Synod meeting.

Committee chair Rev Alistair Macrae said the committee had written to all presbyteries and Congress executives inviting them to participate in the important discernment process.

“Presbyteries can make nominations and so can individuals,” Mr Macrae said.

“We ask that, in the first instance, the nominee not be approached for permission for their nomination.”

Nominations for the role of moderator will be short-listed and then interviewed by the committee. Three names will be presented to the Synod meeting in September for consideration.

A former assembly president and synod moderator, Mr Macrae noted the diversity and importance of the role in the life of the church.

“The moderator is called on to be pastor, proclaimer and prophet,” Mr Macrae said.

“The moderator will be in situations which require skills and qualities of visionary, counsellor, theological reflector, encourager, conflict manager, facilitator of change, reconciler, networker, advocate, risk-taker and spokesperson.”
