Keilor East Airport West Uniting Church has been praised in the Parliament of Victoria for organising the ‘Say No to Family Violence’ forum on 25 March. The public event, held at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School, aimed to raise awareness of the social, health and economic impact of family violence.
Approximately 200 people attended the event. The speakers on the night were: Fiona McCormack, CEO of Domestic Violence Victoria; Fiona Richardson MP, Minister for Women and the Prevention of Family Violence; Tim Cartwright, Acting Chief Commissioner of Police; and Nathan DeGuara, manager of Men’s Referral Service.
Ben Carroll MP, state member for Niddrie and Parliamentary Secretary for Justice, paid tribute to Keilor East Airport West Uniting Church for bringing the issue of family violence into the public space.
“I would like to thank the moderator [of the event], Reverend Jeanne Beale, chaplain at Aitken College, who ensured that the proceedings ran smoothly,” Mr Carroll told parliament.
“My heartfelt thanks go to the elders of the Keilor East Airport West Uniting Church, in particular Barbara Dorward and Maxine Knight, who put in a lot of hard work to make the forum the outstanding success it was.”
A total of $1060 was donated by attendees in support of the Luke Batty Foundation.
