A troupe of Taiwanese Bunun singers will perform traditional songs in concerts throughout Victoria this September.
The Bunun tribe are mountain people from southern Taiwan and are one of 14 Indigenous tribes of the region.
Uniting Church minister Rev Arthur Poole has been involved with the Bunun community for more than 25 years. Mr Poole has led UnitingWorld sponsored group visits to the Bunun community, has been involved with Bunun clergy visits to Australia and also spent time teaching English in the Bunun community in Taiwan.
“The Bunun young people who will be visiting us are senior high school and university students. They will be in Australia for 10 days at the invitation of the Mayor of Frankston city and the Australian Welsh Male Choir,” Mr Poole said.
“They come from the Bunun Cultural and Educational Foundation, an outreach program associated with the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, which is a Uniting Church partner church.”
Mr Poole said the traditional Bunun performances were not to be missed and will also provide an opportunity for cultural exchange.
“I believe this cross-cultural visit will enrich the lives of both these young people and those with whom they will come in contact with while in Australia,” he said.
“For these young people this experience will help them, and us, to a greater understanding of our very different cultures.”
Performances will take place at Ringwood Uniting Church on 13 September at 7.30pm, at Frankston High Street Uniting Church on 14 September at 2.30pm and at Beaumaris Uniting Church on 20 September at 7.30pm.
