What is the connection between The Basis of Union and preaching?  The Centre for Ministry at North Parramatta presents the opportunity to explore this in back-to-back conferences in August.

‘The Basis of Union – catalyst for renewal’ is the theme for a conference on the weekend of 22-24 August, followed by a conference ‘Preaching for Transformation’ from 25-28 August.  The national conferences are jointly organised by the Doctrine working group, Uniting Mission and Education and the United Theological College.

Following the successful conference on The Basis of Union held in Melbourne in 2010, it was felt that it was time for another conference considering this foundational document for the Uniting Church. The focus this time is seeing it not as a historical statement so much as one that has the capacity to be a catalyst for renewal.

Every week preaching takes place throughout the Uniting Church. We come from traditions – whether Reformed or Methodist – that placed a great deal of emphasis on preaching. Good preaching is always appreciated.

Preaching is not primarily about information but transformation.  It seeks to bring God’s Word in a way that will change and enable us to be in line with God’s renewing and reconciling purposes.

Clay Schmit from the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in the USA will be the key speaker at the Preaching conference.
Workshops will be led by Peter Davis, Gerard Moore, Teresa Parish, Lu Senituli, Liz Boase, Alan Robinson, Ockert Meyer and others.

Several people will share their thoughts from various perspectives and invite discussion at The Basis of Union conference.

The conference will include input from people such as President Andrew Dutney, Geoff Thompson, Bec Lindsay, Ji Zhang, Michelle Cook and Ken Sumner. It will also provide opportunities to engage with one another. Two professors from the Chinese Church will be joining us at the conference enabled by UnitingWorld. There will also be a panel discussion from younger leaders led by Alistair Macrae.
