For more than 60 years, the Friendship Group at Wheelers Hill Uniting Church have been combining fun with fundraising. Their most recent event was ‘Sari Night’, hosted by Wheelers Hill minister Rev Charles Sundaresan and his wife Saras.
Members of the friendship group were able to choose from Saras’ wardrobe of saris collected over many years. Friendship group member Eleanor Allan said the women needed a little help from Saras and the Sundaresan daughters to navigate the outfits.
“We were invited to choose a sari and then we were ‘dressed’ for the occasion,” Ms Allan said. “All our members and guests looked magnificent and we enjoyed much hilarity and mutual admiration.”
The friendship group started in 1951 and since that time has supported a variety of outreach activities including Samaritan’s Purse, Red Cross Trauma Teddies and Sammy Stamp.
“The group continues to support outreach projects and several years ago started supporting the Backpack project, supplying education material to students in need,” Ms Allan said.
“With the support of the congregation our small group contributed 11 backpacks this year.”
