On 19 May, the day of Pentecost, Ballarat Central Uniting Church issued a challenge to its own congregation and neighbouring churches to climb the steep hill alongside the church and sign the Micah Challenge. In the year 2000, Australia – along with 188 other nations – signed the Millennium Declaration which states:
“We will spare no effort to free our fellow men, women and children from the abject and dehumanising conditions of extreme poverty.”
In doing so, Australia agreed to help achieve eight Millennium Development Goals which together aim to halve the incidence and worst aspects of extreme poverty by 2015.
This year, the federal budget deferred that increase to the 2017-2018 financial year.
More than 80 people in Ballarat added their names to the petition (and took petition sheets home to gather more signatures) to show the government they believe this is a challenge that needs to be completed.
