125 years of sharing

Longwarry Union Church, an early ecumenical church, celebrated its 125th anniversary with a commemoratory service in November last year. Approximately 150 people attended the service led by Rev Ann Scott, which was followed by lunch and a display of memorabilia in the church’s hall.

As part of the celebrations, guest group FolkUs sang several brackets of sacred songs and a DVD presentation of past church concerts was shown. Memorabilia included preaching plans from 1891 (which mentioned the cost of £5.3.6 for horse food for the quarter) and a Sunday school prize from 1909. Wedding photos as well as wedding gowns of brides married in the church throughout the years were also on display.

The history of the Longwarry Union Church goes back to 1886 when services were first held in Fraser’s Mill Hall in the small town of Longwarry, 83km south-east of Melbourne. The hall was handed to the people of Longwarry together with the land it occupied as a government grant on the condition that it was for the combined use of the Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian congregations. The original weatherboard building was replaced in 1961 and a church hall added several years later.
